With my Pattern Play class kicking off this week, I felt like this layout was a good one to share today. It's a layout that I created for a We Create class and it served as some inspiration for Pattern Play.

Supplies used - Cardstock, patterned paper, stickers: American Crafts; Embroidery floss: DMC; Computer font: Century Gothic
To create the "X" pattern background we used 1 x 3" strips, adhered them together, and then arranged them point to point to create a background.
Some tips for creating this background:
I found it easiest to use a grid surface like an Omnigrid ruler or the Tim Holtz paper trimmer as a guide. I used that grid to make a cross by laying one strip horizontally and then adhered the vertical one on top. This makes it so much easier to make a perfectly arranged "+" instead of trying to make one while looking at it as an "X".
To arrange the background, I thought it was easiest to start with a 12 x 12" base and start adhering the "x" pieces on one edge and work your way across. Then trim the background to fit.

For the stitching I did a kind of random placement, creating an almost plaid-like design. There are several ways you could arrange the stitching.
• through the middle of the strips
• as a border on each strip
• plaid-style on the inner edges of the strips
• plaid-style on the outer edges of the strips
• plaid-style with a mix of both outer and inner edges (like my layout)

I enjoyed this pattern so much that I've used it several times already!

And speaking of my Pattern Play class, the registration was only suppose to go until Sunday, March 2 but, it looks like our tech person hasn't taken it off the website yet so if you are interested (and you hurry) you might be able to catch it!
