Sketch Support #9 | Learn How to Use and Adapt Scrapbook Sketches | Day 1

Updated: Jan 31, 2022

Here we go! A new FREE two-page sketch, five layout examples...it's time for Sketch Support!

This week I will be sharing a layout Monday through Friday and then on Monday, June 1 I'll post the video version of Sketch Support.

Here is the two-page sketch I used for the starting point of each layout I'm sharing this week.

You can download the full sketch with measurements and placements by clicking here.

I stayed pretty close to the sketch for my first layout.

Variation #1 - Removing photos & using large photos in place of smaller photos.

I've mentioned it before, but just in case you didn't know, when it comes to selecting photos for my Sketch Support layouts, I use photos that I have already printed. I do this to show you guys that you can pretty much make any set photos work with any sketch. Maybe not ALWAYS, but most of the time you can make it work.

I had this set of five photos of Jackson on his dad's shoulders and for the most part they were a perfect fit for this sketch. I had printed them all in 3 x 5" because it's one of my favorite sizes to work with. The photo size fit for most of the sketch, but I didn't have any smaller photos that would work for the 2 x 2" photos on the sketch.

I made the choice to remove the bottom 2 x 2" photo and then use a 3 x 3" photo (cut from a 3 x 5" photo) in place of the top two 2 x 2" photos.

Variation #2 - Changing the size or orientation of papers used.

I made a few changes to that middle rectangle piece. On the sketch it is a 6 x 5" piece. I had this 6 x 4" card from Simple Stories that I really wanted to use. I like the dark wood and I wanted to use the "Good Day Sunshine" as my title.

If I just used the card alone I would have these funny gaps above and below the card that just didn't seem fitting. My solution was to add a 1/2" strip above and below the card. The combined measurements of the card and the two strips comes out to be 6 x 5", just like the rectangle on the sketch.

Variation #3 - Adjusting elements like the title, journaling, and embellishments to fit.

Because I used the print on the card as my title, I changed things around a little bit to better fit on that rectangle. I moved the photo so that it was above the title. I used my journaling strips to fill in the space between the photo and title. Then to finish I added some clusters of embellishments in the corners.

That's it for today! Be sure to check back tomorrow to see layout #2!
